Summary

HB486 would permit public school teachers to provide instruction in the history of American Christianity without running afoul of the First Amendment. The bill equates "religion" with "Christianity" and demonstrates an uncritical and revisionist approach to American history.

Status

HB486 was introduced in the House on September 29, 2025, and was assigned to the House Education Committee on October 1, 2025. The bill had its first hearing (sponsor testimony) on October 7, 2025. The bill had a second hearing (opponent testimony) on October 21, 2025, and had a third hearing (proponent testimony) on November 4, 2025. The bill subsequently had a fourth hearing (interested party testimony) on November 13, 2025. It was voted out of committee on November 18, 2025, and now heads to the House for a vote.
