Transgender Folks and the Church: Conversations and questions with transgender Christians and their families

July 17, 2020

Within the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, the “T” for transgender is oftentimes misunderstood and overlooked. Gender identity is different than sexual identity, and transgender folks have unique needs, challenges, and experiences within the Church. Come listen to the stories of transgender Christians and their families as they share their journeys to reconcile their faith with their gender identity, and express ways the Church can welcome, include, and love transgender people in their communities. The webinar will include time for Q & A; questions are welcomed and encouraged!

This webinar will be presented via Zoom. The only people visible on screen will be the panelists. Your personal video and audio will be disabled, but you will be able to interact with the panelists via chat and Q&A, if you desire. A Zoom link to join the webinar will be sent to you the day before the event, and again 1.5 hours before it begins.

Clergy Conversation: Reflections on LGBTQ+ Inclusion with Rev. Danny Cortez

July 29, 2020

Is your church or organization discerning how to navigate diverse views and beliefs on sexuality and gender identity?  Are you struggling with how to lead these conversations well in your community or how to care better for LGBTQ+ people? If you, like many pastors, are feeling torn between personal beliefs, expectations from your congregation, denominational views, and your love for LGBTQ+ friends and siblings in Christ, this webinar is for you! Wednesday, July 29th at 10 am pdt/ 1 pm edt.

Join us for an informal chat with Rev. Danny Cortez, author of the newly released Clergy Relational Guide, and board member at Q Christian Fellowship. The Clergy guidebook is intended for those who come from non-affirming spaces, but are intentionally discerning how to create safe and equitable spaces for LGBTQ+ people. Danny will share insights from his own journey of discernment on LGBTQ+ inclusion in the church, pastoring New Heart Community Church, and as a parent of a gay son.

Rev. Danny Cortez served as the pastor of New Heart Community Church. Originally founded as a Southern Baptist Church, they were dismissed from the denomination as a result of becoming inclusive of LGBTQ people in 2014. In 2018, Danny started Estuary Space, a non-profit that provides consultation to faith communities as well as pastoral support to LGBTQ+ people and their families. He is a graduate of Talbot Theological Seminary and Arrow Leadership. He currently serves on the board of Q Christian Fellowship and PFLAG San Gabriel Valley. He authored The Clergy Relational Guide to help churches move towards the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.

Faith In Families

Has your child told you they’re gay or transgender? Not sure how to handle the news? Worried about what this means for your child and family?

When you find out your child is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, it can put a strain on the entire family. You might experience a range of emotions including confusion, anger, surprise, grief, guilt, and disappointment. You may be feeling concerned for your child’s present or future well-being. You could even be wondering why this happened and if you did something wrong.

You are not alone; many families go through this. Some find this time to be slightly challenging – a mere bump in the road. Others, though, find it the most challenging thing they’ve had to face as a family. As difficult as it may seem, there is a path to peace and reconciliation.

Faith in Families is a four hour program offered by Lighthouse Youth and Family Services, in partnership with LOVEboldly. The program is designed for parents and other adult caregivers to receive support and information when their child comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The program offers an opportunity to address worries and concerns and have questions answered by professional staff. Family members can expect a confidential and respectful experience. All families, regardless of belief or background, are welcome. The program is free and lunch is provided. Lunch includes a special presentation and panel discussion for families with religious questions facilitated by LOVEboldly.
