Response to Signing of HB8

Rev. Dr. Ben Huelskamp

Jan 8, 2025

LOVEboldly is dismayed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s decision to sign HB8 into law. HB8 not only forces teachers, administrators, and school counselors to out LGBTQIA+ students to their parents and guardians, but it also prohibits teachers from discussing LGBTQIA+ topics with students. Throughout the debate on HB8 and other bills added to the legislation as amendments, faith has often been invoked to support this measure. As a progressive faith organization and voice, LOVEboldly categorically dismisses that rhetoric. HB8 does not reflect the tenets of our faith. In fact, HB8 requires teachers, administrators, and school counselors to violate the deeply held conviction of our faith that God made us LGBTQIA+ and that God not only affirms our sexual orientations and gender identities, but celebrates us as the Body of Christ and beloved children of God.

LOVEboldly exists to create spaces where LGBTQIA+ people can flourish in Christianity. Though oriented to Christianity, we envision a world where all Queer people of faith can be safe, belong, and flourish both within and beyond their faith traditions.
