“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:13-14)
All of humanity was made in our Creator’s image, not in your image. While this opening remark might seem harsh, it is important to remember. Far too often, humanity passes judgment on who is worthy and acceptable based upon how similar they are to those passing judgment. We see this throughout human history as people are constantly cast into slavery or determined to be less worthy, just because they are different. Our Creator does not pass judgment on humanity in this way, as we are all different and unique from our Creator.
While it is said we are made in the image of our Creator, you can easily see that the image is not based upon gender, sexuality, skin color, or race. That image is based upon spirit and soul. Sexuality and gender are comprised of a person’s personality, and as such are part of the image that our Creator created. To state that we are supposed to remain as we were born is to completely disregard the greatest gift that our Creator gave us, the
gift of life. Humanity has been gifted life, and with that comes the ability to grow and evolve as we learn and experience all that life has to offer. We are not expected to remain exactly how we were born, but to grow.
Similarly, we must remember that we all experience existence differently, and therefore will look and act different. No one way to live can be called the “correct” way as each individual existence is meant to be experienced uniquely.
Reflection and Action
Reflect upon your life experiences and write about what image our Creator made you in.
